WAVE River Counties Ag Day in Wickliffe

Plans are shaping up for the first-ever WAVE River Counties Ag Day, to be held this year on July 13 from 10 am to 2 pm in Wickliffe city park.

Organizers say there will be exhibits and activities for all ages, from a petting zoo and bounce houses for the younger visitors, to farm safety demonstrations and ag-related exhibits for everyone. There also will be a number of local vendors on hand offering a variety of food and beverages.

A group of farmers, business people, educational institutions and elected officials in the counties of Ballard, Carlisle, Fulton and Hickman has been working on this first-of-its-kind event here since March. For more information and up-to-the-minute additions to the exhibitors and schedule, check out the WAVE River Counties Ag Day page on Facebook, or email wave.ag.day@gmail.com.

The day will begin with an appreciation breakfast for River County farmers, ag business leadership, educators, sponsors and exhibitors at the new visitors’ center at the Fort Jefferson Cross Memorial in Wickliffe. Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles and Warren Beeler, executive director of the Governor’s Office of Agriculture Policy, are scheduled to speak at the breakfast. Nominations from all four counties have been made for three awards to be given at that time, all of which are sponsored by Platinum-level sponsors of the event: Farmer of the Year, by Kentucky Farm Bureau; Ag Business of the Year, by Monsanto; and Friend of Agriculture by H&R Agri Power.

The Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s mobile classroom will be at the park, along with Dale Dobson’s presentations on ATV and lawnmower safety. There will be exhibitors, vendors and educational programs at the park that will highlight the rich resources and hidden beauties of all four river counties, from agriculture to natural resources to commercial opportunities – some of which are only found in this unique region of Kentucky. The committee plans to make this an annual event that rotates through the four counties.

“Everyone is invited to attend this first-ever, first-of-its kind day. There will be something for everybody - food, and fun, and things to do,” said committee chairman Bob Wilson. “We’ll be announcing more exhibitors, vendors and sponsors very soon.”

Sponsors for the event include Beck’s, Citizens Deposit Bank, Crop Production Services, Hutson Ag Inc., River Valley Ag Credit, and Tosh Farms.
