July Wellness Programs & Support Groups
By WestKyStar Staff
MURRAY, KY - Staff at Murray-Calloway County Hospital and the Center for Health & Wellness will be offering educational health promotion events during the month of July to community members, Wellness Center members and MCCH employees.

A free Living Well Workshop will be held Tuesdays in July (9, 16, 23 and 30) as well as in August (6 and 13) from 5-7:30 p.m. at the Center for Health and Wellness. It is a self-management program for individuals suffering from chronic disease: Licensed coaches co-facilitate the workshops, one or both of whom have chronic diseases themselves. The program will not conflict with existing programs or treatments. It is designed to enhance regular treatment and disease-specific education.

How does it help? The way the program is taught is what makes it effective. Workshop sessions are lively and participative; workshop members talk, share, practice skills and learn together over six weeks. Mutual support and success build confidence in the ability to manage health and maintain active and fulfilling lives.

Subjects Covered Include:
· Techniques to deal with problems and symptoms such as frustration, fatigue, pain, negative emotions, and isolation.
· Exercise/physical movement for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance.
· Appropriate and effective use of medications.
· Communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals.
· Nutrition.
· Evaluating new treatment options.

The Center for Health and Wellness will host a blood drive on Wednesday, July 24 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Come give the gift of life for the MCCH Blood Donor Center.

A free nutrition education event titled “Nutrition Bar 101” will be held Friday, July 26 from 10-10:30 a.m. in the Center for Health and Wellness. They are so simple to grab, delicious to eat, and must be healthy because all their labels say they are, right?  WRONG!  As you will learn, despite what their fancy labels may lead you to believe, not all nutrition bars are created equal.  Join Rebecca Wright, RD and learn how to see through the marketing claims in order to find the healthiest options to meet your nutritional needs.

Looking ahead to August, an AARP Safe Driving class will be held Wednesday, August 8 and a sports drink nutrition event will be held Friday, August 16. Call 270-762-1348 for more information.
