SPIRITUAL WELLNESS, FOUNDATION FOR TOTAL WELLNESS
By Traci Lawrence
Unfortunately when hearing the word wellness many individuals think only of physical fitness or a healthy physical state that is free of disease. A healthy and strong body is definitely important and it is a vital part of total wellness but it is only one component.
Total wellness looks at every component of our humanness. A totally well person demonstrates: physical, mental, spiritual, social and financial wellness. When any one of these areas is neglected or weak it will eventually show and typically leads to problems in other areas of our lives.
As much as we want to experience total wellness, there is someone who wants it for us even more. I am speaking of God, the creator of the universe and all humanity. He desires for his children to be well, peaceful and prosperous. Listen to what Jesus says in John 10:10 “The thief comes to steal and to kill; I have come that they may have life and have it more abundantly.”
God in his unending love, mercy, wisdom and grace sent his son to pay for all of our sins and he desires a personal, deep and trusting relationship with people. He also provided the Bible to provide instruction, hope and encouragement for our battles in this world.
The Bible contains the wisdom needed to achieve and maintain total wellness. Yes, I said that…. I know, that may offend people, and it might not be politically correct, and that is O.K. Where has political correctness and tiptoeing around gotten us? The Bible is truth and it never changes. Each component of wellness is addressed in the Bible.
II Timothy 3:16 says, “ All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”
Many people want to debate and argue about the Bible, this is not meant to be a debate. I realize I cannot make you believe the Bible, that is your very own personal decision. However, if you genuinely get to know God and His truth ,your life will change. Just look at what God has to say about each area of wellness: Only a few verses are listed below.
* What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's. 1Corinthians 6:19-20
*So you shall serve the Lord your God and He will bless your bread and your water and take the sickness away from the midst of you. Exodus 23:25
*You will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you Isaiah 26:3
*For God did not give us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love and of a sound mind.
II Timothy 1:7
*And above all things Have a fervent love for one another, Love covers a multitude of sins.
I Peter 4:8
*And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise. Luke 6:31
*If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. Romans 12:18
*Delight thyself in the Lord and He shall give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4
*If you love money, you will never be satisfied; if you long to be rich, you will never get all you want. It is useless. Ecclesiastes 5:10
*Then he said, “Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.” Luke 12:15
*We brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it. 8 So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content.9 But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction. I Timothy 6:7-9
*And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength Mark 12:30
*But seek ye first the Kingdom of God and all these things shall be added unto you. Matthew 6:33
*Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he shall direct your path. Proverbs 3:5-6
The first step to Spiritual wellness is believing that Jesus is the son of God and that He came to the world and lived a perfect, sinless life. He then willingly died on the cross to pay for all human sin. He was resurrected and now lives. He gave his life so we could live with him in perfection one day. It is difficult to comprehend and hard to believe that a perfect loving and all powerful being would be willing to die for us, but we are his creation, and he loves us.
Now Jesus is waiting on you to call upon him and ask him into your life. Nothing you have ever done is so bad for him to forgive. He loves us…..not our sin, but he loves his creation and his love washes away and forgives ALL our sin and helps heal our scars.
If you don’t have a personal relationship with Jesus, what are you waiting for? None of us know when our last breath will be. He has paid the price now he is waiting on you.
