The American Cancer Society’s annual Dancing With Our Stars Gold Gala, presented by the American Quilter's Society, is scheduled for Saturday, August 4 at the Julian Carroll Convention Center.

Six community leaders have committed to raise funds for the mission of ACS while showcasing their dancing skills at this highly-anticipated annual event.

Karlie Grooms, Chase Karnes, Cullen Pope, Bill Schroeder, Leah Shields and Quent Smith have all spent the past several months working with their dance instructors to perfect their routines, while also raising money to fund the mission of the American Cancer Society.

Bill Schroeder, owner of Rainbow International of Paducah, has enjoyed working with his dance instructor, Ashley White. Although Schroeder is athletic, he is not a dancer, but said White has guided him through the process and made it a fun experience. He also explained why he accepted the nomination when approached to be a star.

“My grandfather was so much more to me than a grandfather; he was a mentor, a teacher but most of all my best friend. He was a community leader that everyone in the Paducah area looked up to. He did not care who you were or where you came from, he would go out of his way to make you feel special. When I heard the news he had cancer it absolutely crushed me. Cancer does not stereotype. It does not care what kind of
person you are. Everyone I know has been affected by cancer. For me, it took my best friend. That is why I wanted to dance for this cause: to raise money to hopefully one day find a cure so people don't have to feel like I did when I got the news,” Schroeder said.

Dance instructor Kelly Davis, Member Services Director for the Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce, explained her motivation to become involved for the first time this year as an instructor by saying, “This event combines my passions and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to participate. What better way to share my love for dance than by helping my Star learn new skills and gain confidence that will shine through during her performance, while raising money to help combat a disease that has touched most every family I know. I can’t wait to see the Stars perform but the real impact comes through helping the American Cancer Society fight for the lives of cancer patients we know and love.”

Other dance instructors participating are Tracey Childers, Tiffany Okerson and Trish Steckenrider.

Tables and tickets are still available for the event. In addition, silent auction items are currently being collected. There are also opportunities for businesses and individuals to place ads in the event program that will be distributed to all of the attendees on event night. Anyone interested in attending the fundraiser, donating an item for the silent auction or placing an ad in the program is encouraged to reach out to one of the stars or contact Brandi Curtis at the American Cancer Society office at 270-444-0743, or donate directly to the stars by going to www.acsdwos.org.
