Also new this year, MHT will launch its inaugural performance of the new Shakespeare in the Park summer series. The show this summer is Shakespeare’s romantic comedy As You Like It. This new series, in hopes to bring theatre and community together, will offer free performances on July 12, 13, 14 that will take place in Bob Noble Park. Shakespeare in the Park will be headed up by MHT’s Education Assistant Ashlee Soldo.

As announced by MHT, the 56th Signature Season productions include:
Something Dark, written by Paul Elliott
September 12 - 22, 2019
Neal and Vickie are a young couple who have lost their six-year-old son in a drowning accident and move to another state, another home, to try to start life over again. Unfortunately, they’re only in the new home a couple of nights before Vickie begins hearing a child crying in the darkness. Afraid she may be losing her mind, she keeps it a secret from her husband until one night he hears the crying as well. Frantically tearing the house apart, they try to find the source of the crying, hoping that maybe, just maybe it might be their son trying to reach through to them. The thought of him lost between life and death terrifies them, but once they do find the source, they discover something worse, much worse. Something Dark is a ghost story for the stage guaranteed to chill even the most stalwart and skeptical audience member. You’ll be laughing and screaming with equal abandon.

MHT is excited to be presenting Something Dark in its world premiere alongside the renovations of the theatre lobby – the first construction plans to finalize in The Next Stage Campaign.

The November add-on show:
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

What is it like to enter the mind of a young adult with autism?  Christopher, fifteen years old, stands beside Mrs. Shears’ dead dog. It has been speared with a garden fork, it is seven minutes after midnight and Christopher is under suspicion. He records each fact in the book he is writing to solve the mystery of who murdered Wellington. He has an extraordinary brain, exceptional at math while ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. He has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, he detests being touched and he distrusts strangers. But his detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a journey that upturns his entire world.

Evelyn in Purgatory, written by Topher Payne
January 16 - 26, 2020
When a complaint is filed against one of the 70,000 teachers in New York's public schools, they're sent to a Reassignment Center, one of a series of empty offices in the Department of Education Building. There, they sit and wait for their case to be reviewed. Usually for months. Sometimes for over a year. A claim of improper behavior by a failing student lands Evelyn Reid in "the rubber room," where she encounters a group of teachers, some guilty, some not, who have long since lost any hope of returning to a classroom. Over the course of the school year, these colleagues form an unlikely alliance, reminding each other of forgotten passions, emerging to face life outside in unexpected new directions. A smart comedy that will have you laughing and then moved to tears. It’s like the Breakfast Club for teachers.

Native Gardens, written by Karen Zacarias
March 12 - 22, 2020
Pablo, a high-powered lawyer, and his wife Tania, who is very pregnant and working on her dissertation, purchase a house next door to community stalwarts Virginia and Frank Butler. Frank has always been the runner up in the local garden club competition, but this year he has meticulously manicured and pesticide-protected his garden. Pablo announces he has invited the firm’s partners to their new home for a backyard BBQ party in 5 days. Panic-stricken Tania tries to plant wild flowers and vines to redo their back yard in natural splendor. As the neighbors work on their gardens for the party on Saturday, they discover a fence between the yards has been put in the wrong place - it should actually be in the middle of Frank’s prize garden. Who will win out in the war of nature? The hilarious results guarantee no one comes out smelling like a rose. This brand-new comedy, Native Gardens, was selected in alignment with MHT’s multi-year commitment to present diverse actors in featured roles.

A Comedy of Tenors, written by Ken Ludwig
April 16 – 26, 2020
