The third quarter artwork for the 2015 Mayor’s Art Club currently is on display featuring artwork by Juanita Neal Gilliam and by Ashlea McMillan.  The public can view the artwork when City Hall is open, Monday through Friday, 8 am until 4:30 pm.  The artwork will be on display through the end of September.

Sculptures and portraits by award-winning professional artist Juanita Neal Gilliam are on display in the Mayor’s office at City Hall.  Gilliam is the owner of The Art Room located at 314 Broadway.  After a traditional teaching career at local public schools and as adjunct professor at Murray State University, she continues to teach private art classes in painting, drawing, and ceramic sculpture.  Gilliam currently is concentrating on ceramics, creating independent sculptural pieces as well as pottery enhanced with reptiles.  She also works with acrylics, oil, and charcoal.  Gilliam is an exhibiting member of the Wastelanders artist group.  She calls herself a perpetual learner as she can be found attending workshops and classes at the Paducah School of Art & Design.  Gilliam says, “I love to constantly be learning and around people who speak art.  One of my goals as a teacher is to instill in students the love of learning and maintaining that passion throughout their lives.”

In the Mayor’s reception area at City Hall, you can view portraits and landscapes by Ashlea McMillan.  McMillan is a local realtor with Century 21 Service.  She currently is taking classes through the Paducah School of Art & Design and enjoys using family members as subjects of her portraits.  In the Mayor’s reception area, she has provided several paintings and a couple of her endeavors into woodworking and clay.  McMillan says her art is fun and colorful, and she is thrilled to see how she has grown as an artist with some classes under her belt.  McMillan will be at City Hall on Wednesday, July 8 at 11 am to talk about her art.  Everyone is invited to stop by to see her colorful creations.

The eight artists or art groups participating in the 2015 Mayor’s Art Club are as follows:

  • Paul Aho, 1st quarter
  • Clients from NeuroRestorative, 1st quarter
  • Kijsa Housman, 2nd quarter
  • Dogwood Trail Art and Photography Contest Winners, 2nd quarter
  • Juanita Gilliam, 3rd quarter
  • Ashlea McMillan, 3rd quarter
  • Margie and Dwain Smith, 4th quarter
  • Glenn Hall, 4th quarter

In 2013, Mayor Gayle Kaler decided to begin displaying local art at City Hall.  Each quarter of the calendar year, two artists or art groups have the opportunity to display their artwork in the Mayor’s office and reception area on the second floor of City Hall.  This is the third year for the Mayor’s Art Club.  For more information, visit www.paducahky.gov/paducah/mayors-art-club-0
