GOLDEN POND, KY - Hey parents! Let The Homeplace staff teach your kids about chores in the 1850s to help them appreciate air conditioning and vacuum cleaners. Kids can earn tokens to spend in the General Store at Children’s Day on the Farm on Saturday, June 16 at Land Between The Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area. Activities will be taking place on the HP farm from 1-4 pm. Homeplace admission is $4 ages 13 and up, $2 ages 5-12, and free for ages 4 and under. 

Learn about the lives of 1850’s farm children who worked alongside their parents to help raise crops and livestock for the family’s use.  Extra crops, animals, and animal products were sold or traded at the local general store. Other farm made items and chores were traded with neighbors. 

“Chores can be fun when done in the 1850s!” said Cindy Earls, Special Events Coordinator. “Just like in the 1850s, children will learn about the importance of doing farm chores such as carrying water, hoeing the garden and washing clothes. Then, they will learn how children had fun when the work was done.”  Children will earn credits for their hard work and, at the end of their visit, can stop by the Children’s Day General Store to trade credits for 1850’s type goodies.

The Homeplace is located in the Tennessee portion of LBL. Pack a picnic lunch, bring your camera, and enjoy a day of fun and discovery. Activities are for all ages, but are especially geared toward ages 5-12 and home educators. Come to LBL and experience a farm child’s life in the 1850s.
