Children’s Day on the Farm is Saturday, May 30, at The Homeplace 1850’s Farm in Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area. From 1-4 pm, children can step back-in-time and do farm chores typical for children in the 1850s.

Children will learn the importance of doing chores on an 1850’s farm like making a bed, weaving, and attending an 1850’s school at 1, 2, and 3pm. They can also learn how to work mules and oxen at teamster training. Children earn credits for their hard work that can be used at the Children’s Day General Store for 1850’s-type goodies or to play with 1850’s-style games and toys. Homeplace admission is $5 ages 13 and up, $3 ages 5-12, and free for ages 4 and under.

“Farm children worked alongside their parents to help raise crops and livestock for the family’s use,” said Cindy Earls, Lead Interpreter. “Animals, animal products, corn and tobacco crops farm families had, would often be sold to the local general store or traded with neighbors. Children’s Day helps today’s children understand how farm children lived in the 1850s.”

The Homeplace is located in the Tennessee portion of Land Between The Lakes. Pack a picnic lunch, bring a camera, and enjoy a day of fun and discovery! Activities are for all ages. Many activities will be geared towards children ages 5-12 and home educators.
