Eight PTHS Students Chosen for Governor's Scholars

Paducah Tilghman juniors Parker Belt, Reese Butler, Lauren Eickholz, Meg Hancock, Grant Hutcheson, and Lucie Tyrrell have been chosen as scholars and juniors Shelby Browning and Palmer Stroup have been chosen as an alternates for the 2015 Kentucky Governor's Scholars Program.

 

The Governor's Scholars Program is a prestigious five week summer program that is limited to 1,000 of the state's most outstanding students. Established in 1983, the program provides academic and personal growth through the balance of a strong liberal arts program with a full co-curricular and residential life experience.

Parker Belt is a member of the varsity basketball, football, and track teams. He is a member of the Student Council, NHS, Beta Club, FBLA, Interact, and Recycling Club. Community activities include short term missions to El Salvador with Starfish Orphan Ministries, membership in his church youth group, AAU basketball, and serving on the Mayor's Youth Anti-Bullying Council. His parents are David and Abbey Belt and Crystal and Tim Capps.

Reese Butler is a member of the varsity soccer, football, and baseball teams. He is a member of the PTHS Academic team, FBLA, NHS, Beta Club, Mock Trial, Student Council, and Interact Club. Community activities include participation in the Leadership Paducah Youth L.E.A.D. class of 2014-15 and the Lone Oak Church of Christ youth group. His parents are Danny and Lori Butler.

Lauren Eickholz is a member of the varsity golf team. She is a member of NHS, Beta Club, Interact, Recycling Club, Mock Trial, and FBLA. Community activities include participation in the Leadership Paducah Youth L.E.A.D. class of 2014-15 and the Heartland Worship Center youth group. Her parents are Jim and Kim Eickholz.

Meg Hancock is a member of the PTHS Academic team, Speech team, Mock Trial, Literary Circle, Orchestra, Kentucky Junior Historical Society, and NHS. Community activities include serving as a volunteer at Grace Episcopal Church's summer reading camp, participation in the Grace Episcopal Church youth group, serving on the Mayor's Youth Anti-Bullying Council, and serving as an intern on the Paducah Human Rights Committee. Her parents are Justin and Sid Hancock.

Grant Hutcheson is a member of the varsity soccer, track, cross country, and archery teams. He is a member of PTHS Beta Club, Academic team, NHS, FBLA, and Interact. Community activities include service activities through his church youth group. His parents are David and Crystal Hutcheson.

Lucie Tyrrell is a member of the PTHS Interact Club, Beta Club, NHS, FBLA, and Recycling. Community activities include participation in the YDisciples youth group. Her parents are Dana and Michele Tyrrell.

Shelby Browning is a member of the varsity swim team. She is a member of Beta Club, NHS, Literary Circle, and Orchestra. Community activities include serving as a swim school teacher and participating in a UK School of Engineering internship. Her parents are Robert and Michelle Browning.

Palmer Stroup is a member of the PTHS speech team, orchestra, and academic team. He is a member of the staff of the Tilghman Bell. Community activities include participation in the Leadership Paducah Youth L.E.A.D. class of 2014-15, serving on the Mayor's Anti-Bullying Council and participation in the St. Paul Lutheran Youth Group. His parents are David Stroup and Lisa Chappell.

The scholars will convene this year at Bellarmine University, Morehead State University, and Murray State University. The program is designed to help the participants achieve their academic and personal potential, encourage leadership skills, and to develop the their creativity and critical thinking skills.
