A conversation about career possibilities between a knowledgeable adult and a Graves County Middle or High school student can make a tremendous difference in the life of that young person! School counselors in Kentucky face an average ratio of 450 students to one counselor. Therefore, volunteers are essential to fill the void. Graves County Middle and High schools are asking for help in talking with young people to consider their future careers in one-on-one conversations.

The Kentucky Department of Education’s Unbridled Learning: College/Career Readiness for All initiative is designed to ensure that every student is prepared for college and/or career by the time they graduate from high school. Advising is a key strategy for reaching this goal.

Operation Preparation is a joint effort of the Kentucky Department of Education and the Department of Workforce Development and provides a powerful opportunity for schools, students, parents and communities to collaborate in the process of effective advising and focus attention on the importance of planning for college and/or career.

Volunteer community advisors will meet one-on-one with every eighth-grade and tenth-grade student. The community advisor will use the student’s Individual Learning Plan, or ILP, (including career interest inventory and EXPLORE/PLAN results), to discuss the student’s:

  • career aspirations, required education/training and workforce skills
  • whether the student is on target to meet their goals
  • whether the student is taking the courses recommended to prepare them for a successful future

“I will have more than 900 students going through this program and I need your help,” says Mayfield-Graves County Community Education director Kim Wheeler. “If you helped last year, you know that we had an organized plan and we helped approximately 375 students in just three hours! I hope you can help again or if you are new to this project, please come and try it out. The students and I really need your knowledge to work with them.”

The advising sessions at Graves County Middle School are scheduled between 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 27.

Graves County High School’s advising sessions will take place between 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Thursday, April 2.

To volunteer for either session or both or to learn more, phone Wheeler at 270-705-3033 or email her at kimberley.wheeler@graves.kyschools.us
