At Thursday night's McCracken County Board of Education meeting, approval was given for items related to Reidland Intermediate School.

The board approved documents for ongoing remodeling and construction to create the school. Phase II of the project is estimated to cost $2.4 million, and the school for grades 4 and 5 is set to open in fall 2015.

The plans will now be submitted to the Kentucky Department of Education for approval. The board also approved funding of $63,000 to construct a new playground for the school. The playground will be where the practice football field is located and will cover about half of the field area. The same amount of funding was allotted for the playground constructed at Lone Oak Intermediate School when that school opened in the 2013-2014 school year.

The Mustang volleyball team and head coach Tim Whitis were recognized for their accomplishments this season, which included winning 2nd District and 1st Region Championships, and advancing to the quarterfinals of the KHSAA state tournament.

Special recognition was given to Farley Elementary School's FRIENDS Family Resource Center. Robin Brewer and Marianna Romero led the way as the FRIENDS Center was the first from McCracken County Public Schools to receive the Harry J. Cowherd Award of Excellence for Family Resource Centers. Romero was also recently honored as a local woman of achievement.

Grant Writer Adam Shull provided details of a couple of grants the district has received from the Kentucky Department of Education:

- Concord Elementary, Heath Elementary and Heath Middle School received Learn and Launch grants allow for planning of new curriculums that meet new statewide standards for World Language Programs and globally competent instruction. The total grant value is $45,000 and only three districts in the state received the grants. The Heath schools are three of 14 in Kentucky awarded the grants.

- Nine McCracken schools will be able to offer a Grab and Go breakfast to students after receiving $12,600 worth of grants from the Action for Healthy Kids School Grants for Healthy Kids program. Breakfast will continue to be served as usual in the school cafeterias, and the Grab and Go breakfast will be available in the gyms.

The board also approved for the purchase of a truck for the maintenance department, which would replace a vehicle that has served well - its second engine is having serious problems, and part of the floorboard is gone.

On a bittersweet note, this month's school report was presented by Farley Elementary School Principal Paula Grubbs. Since the school is set to close at the end of the school year, Grubbs noted with tears in her eyes that this was the final report to the board for that school. The future principal at Reidland Intermediate School quickly moved to positive subjects, however, noting student improvement in several academic areas as well as attendance. Several Farley faculty members were on hand to hear the report, and to see the FRIENDS Resource Center recognition.
