St. Mary High School junior Catherine O’Rourke has been named a 2015 Kentucky Governor’s Scholar, and Rebekah Courtney has been selected as an alternate for the prestigious academic program. This summer, participating students will attend a 5-week seminar focused on academics at one of three college sites throughout the state of Kentucky.

“We could not be more proud of Catherine and Bekah for being selected for such as prestigious honor,” St. Mary High School principal Susan Higdon said. “The Governor’s Scholar Program recognizes some of the best students in the state, and this a great opportunity for them. Both girls are committed not only to their academic studies, but also to service and faith, which are the three pillars of the St. Mary mission. Their academic foundations, as well the extra-curriculars and servant activities will all be bolstered by this experience.”

A member of St. Thomas More parish, she is active with the music ministry and YDisciple youth group. In addition, she is a volunteer with Four Rivers Sport Horse Equestrian, Kentucky Dressage Association, the McCracken County Humane Society and Groceries For Good.

Courtney is the daughter of Stacey and Tracy Courtney of Melber and is a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, where she serves and lectors, and is involved with YDisciple. At St. Mary, she is affiliated with the basketball and softball teams, National Honor Society, Catholic Youth Leaders, Spanish club and history club. Outside of the classroom, she volunteers with Sisters of Service, Read2Lead, St. Mary Bingo and as a scorekeeper and elementary school basketball games.
