Area law enforcement agencies are participating in Drug Take Back events today to help citizens dispose of unwanted, unused or expired prescription drugs.

The national Drug Enforcement Administration's drug take-back program collects these potentially dangerous prescriptions free and anonymously, with no questions asked. This removes the potential for them to be misused or abused.

Paducah Police are collecting from 10 am until 2 pm at the main entrance to Kentucky Oaks Mall on Hinkleville Road.

Kentucky State Police will also be collecting from 10:00 am through 2:00 pm in the front lobby of KSP Post 1 in Hickory.

Both agencies said they cannot accept liquids, needles or sharps - only pills and patches can be collected.

Over the years, thousands of tons of these prescriptions have been collected and safely disposed of by using the drug take-back program. Last year KSP collected 1,648 pounds during two take back events. Citizens across the U.S. safely disposed of 456 tons of old medications during the previous Take Back Day.
