The Mercy Health – Lourdes Birthing Center has added breastfeeding classes to its roster of free education available to mothers. The new breastfeeding class will take place the third Monday of each month from 6 to 8 pm beginning Monday, Aug. 19. The classes take place in the Borders Community Room on the first floor of the Marshall Nemer Medical Office Building on the campus of Mercy Health – Lourdes Hospital.

The new breastfeeding class will be led by the center’s lactation consultant Natalie Orange, BSN, RN, IBCLC.  Benefits to babies who are breastfed include protection against allergies and eczema, lower rates of respiratory infections, fewer urinary tract infections, fewer ear infections, less stomach upset/diarrhea and constipation, less risk of SIDS and protection against many diseases, including diabetes and lymphoma. Benefits to mothers who breastfeed include lower risks of breast and ovarian cancer, aids post-pregnancy weight loss and decreased risk of osteoporosis.
