As part of Mercy Health’s commitment to fostering healthy communities, we’re pleased to announce a free smoking cessation series, beginning in March, for those interested in quitting smoking.

To help individuals make the decision to quit, the initial class will be the Kentucky Cancer Programs “Plan To Be Tobacco Free,” which is dedicated to helping tobacco users make the decision to quit and to guide them on the use of nicotine replacement and other assistance medications. It will be held on Thursday, March 21 at 7 pm in the Mercy Health Board Room in the Marshall Nemer Medical Office Building.

With the support of Smoking Cessation Counselors trained in the American Lung Association’s Freedom from Smoking program, the rest of the class series is catered toward individuals who have made the decision and are ready to quit smoking.  Most people know that smoking is dangerous to their health, but this program focuses almost exclusively on how to quit successfully, not why to quit. The program offers a structured, systematic approach to quitting, and its positive messaging emphasizes the benefits of better health.

This nine-session, eight-week series of classes will be offered on Thursday evenings (except for Session 7, held on a Monday) from 7-8 p.m. in the Mercy Health Board Room, on the second floor of the Marshall Nemer Medical Office Building. Dates of the nine sessions are: March 21, 28 and April 4, 11, 18, 25, 29 and May 2, 9.

“We are committed to doing all we can to help tobacco users that want to quit to succeed in their efforts - for their health, the health of their loved ones, and the health of all of the communities we serve,” said John Montville, Lourdes Executive Director of Oncology.

Mercy Health will hold additional series later in the year and will announce dates at that time.

The series is free and open to all tobacco users who want to quit. Prior sign up is necessary to attend. Class sizes are limited to the first 20 people. To learn more or to sign up, please call 270-538-5826.

Classes may also be arranged with employers or at locations throughout the area by contacting 270-538-5826
