10th Iron Mom Half-Marathon Will Be Virtual
By Tim Brockwell
PADUCAH - Plans are underway for a virtual version of this year's 10th Iron Mom Paducah Half-Marathon, Relay & 5K to benefit the Family Service Society.

Organizers were forced to cancel last year's race due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but Family Service Society Business Development Director Katie Howard said the plan this year is to offer an all-virtual experience that will mirror an in-person race as closely as possible.

"We're kind of just playing it month-by-month along with the city. We're not allowed to get event permits at this time," she said.

Howard said if the situation changes before race day on May 8 and event organizers are able to get a permit, they may offer an in-person option. Right now she says they are focused on making the virtual race as good as it can be, including using technology in new ways.

"There's an app that we are looking at for our participants to download," Howard said. "It's a way that they can still participate and feel a part of a race, but in a socially distanced way. This app will hopefully provide a way we can include our sponsors."

Each year Iron Mom plays a big part in helping the Family Service Society raise money to continue its mission to assist struggling local families with basic needs.

"We are a crisis resource center to families of Paducah and McCracken County. There's several different assistance programs that we offer including food and personal care items, utility assistance, clothing, a dental program, prescription medication aid and eye-glasses," Howard said.

She added they have also recently begun offering rent assistance, something she says has been needed more and more since the pandemic began.

"This year we're just hoping to honor the event as best we can," Howard said.
