Paducah police are warning the public of a telephone scam in the area.

A woman reported that she received a telephone call from the “Federal Grant Department,” informing her that she had been chosen to receive a $9,000 grant. She was told that she needed to send a $100 processing fee, and she would get the $9,000 through an electronic money transfer.

The woman did not follow the suggestions and didn't lose any money.

Police are warning residents to be especially cautious during the holiday season for anyone who would try cheat them of money, or pretend to be helping the less fortunate and swindle people who are generous. Police recommend donating to causes you are familiar with, or investigating the organization before making a gift.
