Barkley Regional Airport Authority and two other western Kentucky general aviation airports will be receiving more than $2 million in Federal grant money for infrastructure projects and equipment purchases.  Barkley will receive $933,255, with the money expected to be used for the acquisition of snow removal equipment, the improvement of airport drainage, and the installation of taxiway lighting.

Barkley Airport Manager Richard Roof said of the award, “It is always helpful when the Federal government recognizes our needs and helps us to make improvements like these possible. When they (the FAA), looks at the age of the equipment being replaced or rehabbed, they know that we take care of our airfield and equipment so they are getting a great return on their investment."

$466,450 of the grant money is for the replacement of the taxiway lighting, which is more than 20 years old. They'll be installing LED lighting.

“We are particularly excited about this taxiway lighting project,” Roof said.” Not only will it help make us more energy efficient and cut our operating costs,  but the brighter lights will make night-time operations even safer for the pilots that use the airport.”

The decades-old storm sewer system on the airfield apron in front of Midwest Aviation will also be replaced, and a new front-end loader and blade will be purchased for snow removal, replacing a plow that had to be retired after this winter's storms.

The funding provided by these grants covers 90% of each project’s cost, with the remaining 10% coming from airport funds.

Fulton Airport Board will receive $579,550.  The grant will provide federal funding for the construction of an 11,550 square foot hanger building.

Marion-Crittenden County Airport Board will receive $561,258.  The grant will provide federal funding for the construction of a 10,000 square foot hanger building.

“I am pleased to see Barkley Regional, Fulton, and Marion-Crittenden County Airports receiving these federal funds,” Congressman Ed Whitfield said, who made the announcement of the funding for the airports.  “From construction to completion, these projects will provide the opportunity for growth and development within these communities and benefit the surrounding areas as well.”
