A Sunday afternoon accident led to the arrest of a Boaz man on several charges, including assaulting a police officer.

According to the McCracken County Sheriff's Department, at around 5 PM deputies responded to the intersection of Hardmoney and Husbands Rd for a single vehicle accident.

Before deputies arrived on the scene, the driver, later identified as 37-year-old Edwin Draffen of Boaz, had fled the accident into a nearby corn field after being told by witnesses that the police were in route. Their investigation determined that Draffen was southbound on Husbands Road when he lost control of his car and wrecked into a ditch. Witnesses told deputies that Draffen smelled of alcohol and he was stumbling when he ran into the corn field.

Deputies were able to find Draffen a short distance away from the accident. Police said Draffen refused to comply with commands and struggled with the officers, kicking and punching one of them. A Taser was used to subdue Draffen as he was taken into custody.

Both Draffen and the deputy were taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries and both were released after treatment.

Draffen was arrested on several charges, including DUI, resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer. He was booked into the McCracken County Jail.
