On Monday, The McCracken County Fiscal Court held the first reading of their budget ordinance.

On several occasions throughout April and May, workshops were held in which county departments discussed their needs in the 2017-2018 fiscal year budget.

During Monday's meeting Judge Executive Bob Leeper discussed the points of interest in the budget. One of those items is the county employees' pay raise. Most county employees will receive a 2.08% increase in pay.

"That is the cost of living increase which we have tried to support each year, and we were able to do that this year." Leeper said.

He added that the money has come from decreases in expenses and some increase in revenue. Leeper also said  there will be no tax increases this year.

Commissioner Bill Bartleman commended  the staff and Leeper for the work put in to the budget process.

"We just appreciated the hard work everybody did on it." he said.

Bartleman also clarified the $35 million total amount of the budget, saying, "It's a little misleading to say that it's a $35 million budget because a lot of money in there is pass-through money."

Commissioners will vote on the budget at its final reading at the June 2 meeting.
