Driver Hurt After Falling Asleep at the Wheel

A Missouri man was hurt Monday morning in a crash after police say he fell asleep while driving.
 
The McCracken County Sheriff's Office says deputies responded at around 6:40 a.m. to a wreck on KY 286 near the Ballard County line. Deputies said 38-year-old Ryan Claus of Cuba, MO was driving east on KY 286, when he fell asleep and ran off the right side of the roadway. Claus then struck a utility pole head on and his vehicle flipped over. Claus was able to get out of the vehicle after the crash and move to the side of the road. 
 
A short time later a west bound vehicle driven by Ronnie Giles III of Barlow topped a hillcrest and was unable to stop in time to avoid hitting Claus' vehicle. 
 
Claus was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. Giles was not injured in the crash.
 
Deputies said Claus was driving on a suspended license from from a previous DUI conviction. They charged him with Operating on a DUI Suspended license.
 
The roadway was shut down for about an hour and a half after the crash.
