Highway crews are preparing for possible winter weather, as a system approaches that threatens to bring significant amounts of freezing rain to the local area.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Spokesman Keith Todd said the District 1 Snow & Ice Team is preparing for a winter weather event that is expected to begin impacting the area beginning Friday afternoon. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory from noon on Friday to 3:00 am on Saturday.

Todd said crews won't be able to pre-treat roads due to rain expected to fall before temperatures drop below the freezing mark, but they will be out in force salting roads as ice begins to accumulate Friday afternoon. Temperatures are expected to rise back above freezing by mid-morning Saturday.

Forecasters expect a wintry mix to move into the area beginning Friday at around 4 p.m. Todd says there will likely be enough ice accumulation to impact travel during the overnight hours and into the early morning on Saturday before the system moves out of the area. Bridges and overpasses will be the first to experience freezing as the temperature falls.

Todd warned drivers to stay off the roads Friday night and Saturday morning if possible.

"It's gonna be pretty dicey Friday night into Saturday morning. Anytime ice is involved it really limits the ability of our crews to improve driving conditions very much, so everybody just needs to know what they're getting into if they venture out," he said.
