A dump truck with the bed up brought down a utility pole, and closed John Puryear Drive for nearly three hours on Wednesday morning.

According to the McCracken County Sheriff's Department, deputies were called to John Puryear Drive and Hovekamp Road. They said a Central Paving dump truck was traveling on Puryear Drive and the raised bed of the truck struck an overhead utility line, causing the pole to break. There were several wires on the ground with one still attached to the bed of the dump truck.

The driver, 51-year-old David Cummins of Paducah, was still in the truck when deputies arrived. He remained there until Paducah Power determined that he could exit the truck safely.

Cummins stated he was southbound on Puryear Drive and felt something was wrong with the truck. He said that he checked his mirror and saw that the dump bed was up. It was then that the bed made contact with the utility line.

Traffic was rerouted during utility repairs, and Puryear Drive reopened about 1:30 pm. No injuries were reported from the accident.
