Deacon Jones, a member of Boy Scout Troop 2200 in Lone Oak, has taken on a mammoth project to earn his Eagle Scout.

Saturday he rallied 10 of his fellow scouts and friends to clean a dozen historical markers located along Paducah’s riverfront and downtown. Plus he, with permission from the Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) is restoring the Chief Paduke and Paducah Pictorial markers. If these markers are sent back to the foundry to be restored, it costs $1000 for each one. Deacon and his team also cleaned multiple signs and additional bronze markers along the way today.

Deacon has researched, organized and now is working each day he’s not at band practice or band camp, to complete his project. His Dad, Eric Jones, was with the group the entire time on Saturday, providing guidance, transportation, supplies and general support as his son accomplished the day’s goals.

When the group of scouts finished cleaning markers in front of the Convention Center, they boarded the Paducah trolley as it passed by and rode to the riverfront to continue their tasks. It was a day full of rich history and sharing stories of Paducah's past-exactly the purpose of Paducah and McCracken County's over 80 historical markers.

When asked how he chose this particular project Deacon said, “ I noticed there was a need to clean and restore these markers all around town. It’s our history. Some of the original sponsors from the 60s and 70s aren’t around to restore them so I started trying to figure out how we could do it. I called the KHS and they gave me the strict guidelines to do this. I knew we’d have to have lots of help to make a difference. When I asked my fellow scouts to help and get some volunteer community service hours, they agreed and we met Saturday morning at 10 and worked until mid afternoon. A friend from band also came out and helped us.”
