A Paducah educator has announced his candidacy for the 3rd District Seat in the Kentucky House of Representatives.

Thirty-one-year-old Corbin Snardon will be on the ballot for the May 19 Democratic primary, and according to the website Forward Kentucky, he is the first African-American to run for any state legislative seat in the Jackson Purchase.

Snardon told West Kentucky Star he didn't know he was a trailblazer, saying it's bittersweet that in 2020 he would be the first, but he's glad to do it.

Snardon is Assistant Principal at Paducah Middle School.

If elected, Snardon wants to put the district, "on the map," and bring respect, attention and economic development to it.

Snardon said, "We've experienced major closures of bigger employers, even though we have added some, and you know, people need quality jobs, quality employment. We need investment in this area so that we can make this a true economic driver for Kentucky."

While he is still putting together a full platform on issues, Snardon said one statewide policy that needs to change is something the Republican-led legislature passed in 2017.

"With this area - and statewide - right-to-work needs to go. That is the major one, right there," Snardon said.

He said he's gotten an overwhelming positive response from his peers and the community since he announced his candidacy. Snardon said he wants to bring youth, vibrancy, ideas and work ethic to the office, along with a fresh face.

Snardon said, "I bring the face and the image of what Kentucky is going to be, and especially, being an African-American man, you don't see a lot of people like me in the legislature, and you certainly don't see a lot of people from this region running for legislature that look like me."

The 3rd District covers part of Paducah and is currently represented by Republican Randy Bridges.
