The McCracken County School Board is feeling the pain of high electric bills.  So much so, that they had the school attorney send a letter to Paducah Power asking them to release the district as their customers so the district could contract power from Jackson Purchase Energy, which is about 30% cheaper than the rates of Paducah Power.

Officials with Paducah Power met with the school board to discuss the matter.

Andrea Underwood with the utility company issued this statement to West Kentucky Star:

“We consulted with our attorney, and he has advised us that the statute cited in the letter is a part of the Certified Territory Act, which has no application to determine the electric service area of PPS, and that it’s well established by previous rulings that PPS is not subject to the provisions of the Certified Territory Act.

We met Tuesday with the school district’s superintendent, assistant superintendent and board attorney and talked about that and about the financial and logistical aspects of their request, some of which they may not have thought about previously.”

The school district has multiple buildings served by Paducah Power, a few already on Jackson Purchase, and at least one building on Kentucky Utilities.

Paducah Power has been under fire over the past year for their high electric bills.  The new general manager, Gary Zheng, has promised to do everything he can to bring the rates down.
