Representatives with the U.S. Department of Energy were at Sam's Club in Paducah Wednesday morning purchasing items to distribute to local charities Wednesday morning as part of the Feds Feed Families National Program.

These food and personal hygiene items will help non-profit organizations in McCracken and Ballard counties like Martha's Vineyard, Salvation Army, Paducah Cooperative Ministry, River City Mission, Community Kitchen, Family Services Society, St. Mary's Food Pantry, and Lighthouse Community Food Bank.

Organizer Brandon Townsend said the program has raised about $12,000 locally this year to benefit those in need.

"We've raised money over the summer, and we've been going around and talking to these local charities and asking them for items that they would want to give out to the community. We take those items and we put them in a list, and we're taking it to Sam's Club here. We're paying for them, and then we're giving them out to these local charities to give out to the community." He said.

Since the campaign began in 2009, federal workers have donated more than 57 million pounds of food and other non-perishable items to support families at risk of hunger across America.
