A structure fire on Lovelaceville Road did extensive damage to several apartment complexes near Windmill Drive Wednesday afternoon, and had the road blocked for several hours.
Deputy Steve Croft of the McCracken County Sheriff's Department was one of the first on the scene, and knocked on several doors, or entered the buildings to make sure nobody was inside. No people or pets were found, but several vehicles were in attached garages. Apartments on either side also caught fire, since the buildings were very close to each other. Embers also ignited an apartment behind the original blaze.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene, and the warm weather along with intense heat from the fires caused some firefighters to take breaks for their own safety.
Because it is a narrow road, emergency vehicles on the scene had to block the road as they fought the blaze. Traffic was backed up in both directions and motorists were forced to use alternate routes until the fire was extinguished.
