Just before a telephone conference Friday in U.S. District Court, fired Reidland teacher Shawnda Pacheco withdrew her request for a restraining order against McCracken County Schools.

The order could have allowed her to continue teaching while her case was reviewed, but the Paducah Sun learned Friday that Pacheco and her attorney will refile the request after it is trimmed down from 16 pages and made more specific.

Pacheco was fired January 18 by Superintendent Nancy Waldrop, who accused her of insubordination and conduct unbecoming at teacher, after she instructed a student to write a letter to the Paducah Sun about possible threats made against the school by another student. An investigation by the McCracken County Sheriff's Department stalled when the newspaper refused to release the names contained in the letter, citing them as confidential sources.

Pacheco's case will also be heard by a tribunal for the state Commissioner of Education this spring, and in a hearing for the Educational Professional Standards Board, which could revoke her teaching certificate.
