Friends of Library Summer Book Sale This Weekend
By West Kentucky Star Staff
PADUCAH, KY - The Friends of McCracken County Public Library's semi-annual summer used book sale opens to the public on Friday, July 18 at 9 am. The Friends will be there until 7 pm and on Saturday, July 19 from 9 am - 1 pm in the gymnasium at St. Paul Lutheran Church Gym, 21st and Kentucky Avenue.
The Friends collect and sort weekly year-round for this major library fundraiser. The proceeds, after expenses, are donated to the McCracken County Library in support of collection and program development. Over the last twenty plus years, Friends have donated almost $300, 000 to the library.
Jennie Boyarski, summer book sale coordinator, stands in the center of the gym Wednesday afternoon, working with several "Friends" volunteers. "We've transported and unloaded about 1200 boxes for the sale. Each box holds an average of 20 books. This is a huge sale with a wide variety of books, some collector books and rare finds for our patrons. It will be a busy weekend. We are just about ready thanks to all the tireless support of our Friends volunteers."
Thanks to the donation of a large paperback book collection, this sale will feature a larger than usual collection of large print, science fiction/fantasy, western, and fiction paperback titles. Boyarski said, “Most of the sale materials are in a subject arrangement; however, there will be several tables of audiovisual materials as well as special collection titles that feature collector and local interest authors and topics.”
One of the titles in the special collection is a 1965 out-of-print hardback book, “The Robot That Helped to Make a President: A Reconnaissance into JFK’s Signature” by Charles Hamilton. This rare find, which will be offered below market price, is signed by the author with 10 bonus examples of JFK’s signature in stand-alone pages.
Most of the hardback and trade edition books will sell for $1 each, and many paperbacks will be offered at 50 cents each. The media materials are also offered at rock bottom prices.
Back by popular demand, the St. Paul Lutheran Church congregation will offer a bake sale during the book sale. The proceeds support mission projects at the church.
