Hayden to Retire, Carter Announces Sheriff Run

McCracken County Sheriff Jon Hayden has announced that he will not seek re-election, and has endorsed Captain Matt Carter to fill his position. 

Hayden made the announcement Friday afternoon at the McCracken County Courthouse. He says he has enjoyed his time as sheriff, but said he is retiring so he can spend more time with family.

"One of my many goals that have the highest priority was that when my time has ended that I have left the agency in a better place than when I was elected." Hayden said.

Hayden gave his endorsement to Carter, saying Carter has the integrity the job requires.

"I have found Captain Matt Carter to have the utmost integrity," Hayden said. "His honesty and proffesionalism are paramount in his beliefs, his actions, and the way he lives his life."

Carter, who spoke surrounded by friends and family, touted his experience working in various types of cases over his years as a deputy as evidence that he is prepared for the job.

"I believe it's impossible to lead by example if you don't have the experience that enables you to know how to lead in each and every one of the variety of challenges that law enforcement faces today." Carter said.

Hayden has served as McCracken County Sheriff since 2006.
