Traffic on I-24 was snarled for several hours Thursday morning while responders worked the scene of two crashes in the same area.

At around 9:00 AM Thursday, responders were dispatched to I-24 at the 8 mile marker for a roll over crash with injuries.

The McCracken County Sheriff's Office said 38-year old Christopher Schlachter, of O'Fallon IL was eastbound on I-24 with passengers 65-year old Jesse Adkins, of Bellville IL and 21-year-old Cody Strunk, of Shiloh IL.

Witnesses told police they saw the 25 foot camper Schlachter was pulling begin to sway from left to right. The sway became more violent, until Schlachter lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle then flipped, coming to rest in the median.

Schlachter and Adkins were taken to Lourdes Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Police said a second crash at the same location happened when 53-year-old David Schlosser, of Springfield, IL parked his motorcycle on the side of the road to help Schlachter and his passengers. As Schlosser ran to the wrecked vehicle, 31-year-old Clayton Baker, of LaCenter stopped his semi to assist the wreck victims. The semi then began to roll forward, and hit the bike.

Commercial Vehicle Enforcement inspected the semi, which is owned by Metropolis Ready Mix, and cited Baker for issues discovered during the inspection.

I-24 was restricted in each direction for about three hours due to the crashes.
