An inmate at the McCracken County Jail has died.
According to Coroner Dan Sims, 68-year-old Joseph Morris Askew died in the jail on Tuesday morning.
Sims told WestKentuckyStar that Askew was booked into the jail on Monday afternoon to serve a sentence, and jail medical staff knew he had a pre-existing medical condition.
Medical staff said Askew was fine on Monday afternoon when he got his medications, but as they made their rounds to administer medications shortly after 5 am Tuesday, Askew was unresponsive and not breathing.
Medical staff began CPR and called Paducah Fire and McCracken County EMS to the scene, but they could not revive Askew. Sims was called to the jail at 5:39 am, and he called a McCracken County Sheriff's Detective to the jail as well. Askew was declared dead at the scene.
Sims said autopsy results from the State Medical Examiner's office in Madisonville showed Askew died from natural causes related to cardiovascular disease and other medical conditions. Foul play is not suspected.
