Iron Mom Half Marathon Postponed
By West Kentucky Star Staff
PADUCAH - The Mercy Health Iron Mom half marathon has been postponed.

According to a Tuesday press release from organizers, the event set for May 9 will be rescheduled due to concerns over the novel coronavirus.

The new date for the race has not been set because of uncertainty regarding the time required before federal and state health officials would allow large events and gatherings.

Planners for the event say they will continue to monitor updates from the CDC and the World Health Organization and will release more details about the event when they are available.

They encouraged everyone to take good care of their physical, mental and emotional health during this pandemic, including a reminder to, "wash those hands, keep up the social distancing, and keep running!"

Organizers also remind everyone of the importance of organizations like the Family Service Society, especially during times like these, and encouraged those who are able to support them financially.

Here is the complete press release:

"Dear Runners and Volunteers,

Out of an abundance of caution, the Mercy Health Iron Mom originally set to take place for May 9, 2020 will be rescheduled to a date yet to be determined. Mercy Health – Lourdes Hospital is committed to the safety and security of our associates, patients, residents and communities.  The influx of new, daily developments and information regarding this virus has brought many questions. We want to let you know that the safety and security of each event participant and volunteer is our top priority, and that is one reason that we are taking COVID-19 seriously.

We continue to monitor updates provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization, and are working with local and state departments of health to ensure we are aligned on prevention, protocols and next steps. The ever changing and unfolding coronavirus crisis has significantly affected events, meetings, and social gatherings across the globe. Large events and gatherings, even when planned outdoors, can significantly contribute to the spread of coronavirus throughout communities.
Due to the uncertainty surrounding this pandemic we have not yet set an alternate date for the race. As we continue to monitor the situation and adhere to CDC guidelines we will keep you updated on any progress and potential make up dates for the event.
During this time it is important to keep yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy. We encourage you to wash those hands, keep up the social distancing, and keep running!
Running has been shown to decrease stress, increase lung capacity, and strengthen your immune system....all things we need now more than ever!
That being said, organizations such as Family Service Society are crucial during these trying times and depend on events such as Iron Mom to ensure needs are met for many individuals in our community. We encourage you to keep supporting our organization and watch for updates on the race and other fundraising efforts! And most importantly
'The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.' Coretta Scot King"
