Local Horses4Heroes Helps Animals, Veterans
By Mary Elliott
WEST PADUCAH, KY - It has been said that in war there are no unwounded soldiers. Darla Bond, Executive Director of Wisdom of Life Farm, locally hosts the Horses4Heroes program- a non-profit organization that helps veterans.
Bond wanted a place where soldiers and their families could come and "have a country experience and relax on the farm." The horses gaze over the fence at the commotion as you're greeted by at least five dogs and one rooster when pulling into the driveway at 5065 Cold Springs Road, West Paducah, KY.
"All our animals are mostly rescue animals, and I want to promote the awareness of pet therapy. Rescue animals rescue people and rescue people help the rescued animals," Bond reflects. A former special education teacher, she also has a counseling degree and has studied criminal justice.
When asked what got her interested in the program she said, "I've always had a heart for military servicemen and woman and want to make a place where not only veterans and their families can come and have fun, but also for school tours or church groups to come out and have a hands-on learning experience."
The 26 acre farm has chickens and ducks and raises their own eggs. One of her former students, Trevor Mann, is here from Florida helping to prepare the farm by clearing nature trails, starting a garden and he has hopes to "run the farm one day."
A wiener roast fundraiser is on October 13th from 3-8 pm. Cowboy style church services are held Sunday at 5 pm.
Contact Bond at 270-558-4174 or email darla9metro@yahoo.com. Please call to make an appointment to ride at the farm or to set-up trail rides. She invites all to come for a visit and accepts any donations to help with the animals.
