Police in McCracken County had to swim into the Ohio River to arrest a man that they at first thought was dead.

The McCracken County Sheriff’s Department says they received a call Wednesday at around 4:30 pm about a man lying at the end of Metropolis Ferry Landing Road, and the caller said that the man appeared to be dead, with a syringe sticking out of his arm.

Deputies say when they got there, they saw a man near where the road ends because of flooding, and the man took off, jumped into the water and started swimming towards Harrah's Casino. When deputies went in after him, their radios were cut off when they got underwater, and dispatch sent help from multiple departments. Eventually, they caught 33-year-old Dustin Alderdice of Burna, and took him to a local hospital where he remains under guard.

Deputies say Alderdice has convictions for forgery, cocaine trafficking and robbery, and was out of jail on bond for possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.

Alderdice is charged with public intoxication, resisting arrest, fleeing or evading, and criminal mischief. Police say other charges are possible as the investigation continues.
