Man Injured When SUV Overturns on I-24

PADUCAH, KY - A West Paducah man was injured in an accident on I-24 Monday morning near exit seven.

Paducah Police say 67-year-old Paul W. Henson was eastbound on the interstate when he aparently blacked out. Another West Paducah man, 55-year-old David Alvey, said Henson's pickup side-swiped his van, then crossed the median into the westbound lanes.

Henson's truck flipped, coming to rest on its roof.

An object from Henson's truck struck the rear driver's side of a car driven by 40-year-old Michele L. Smith of Paducah, causing minor damage to her car.

Henson was taken to Western Baptist Hospital for treatment.

  I have family who live in St. Louis and when they come down here, they always complain about the way people drive TOO FAST!!! ST Louis is a much bigger city and probably far less accidents than right here in this small town. I think the speed limit needs to be lowered, because when a lot of people see a speed limit sign, that means go 10 MPH faster than what it says!!!

  Several good comments here, but a few other things occur to me. First, a merge and a yield are two very different things. Yield means you yield. No question. Merge means both parties share responsibility for the merger. This means traffic already on moving to the left lane (IF possible) or (God forbid) killing the cruise control and slowing down (or speeding up, depends on what you drive and what works). What you can't do is refuse to be inconvenienced and run someone off the road. And yes, I have seen intersections where there are merge AND yield signs… which means someone screwed up, and no one knows what to do. Secondly, some people just shouldn't be on the road in the first place. While driving westbound at exit 16, a young lady merged at about 10 MPH, came to a complete stop in the right lane, and put on her left turn signal to merge into the fast lane... apparently thinking she was still on the on ramp. I had slowed to let her in, and ended up stopped behind her, putting my entire family at very real risk of being rear-ended. After setting there for 30 seconds, I hit my horn and motioned her to go on. All this got me was flipped off by her boyfriend... guess he didn't know they were stopped in the slow lane either. I doubt they ever figured out what they had done wrong. Seriously, some people just should not be driving.

  Since we are all complaining about the way OTHERS drive, why is it that some people can't use the right lane? They get in the left lane and drive way under the speed limit. And yes, some semi's don't move but remember some of them can't because some jerk is in the left lane driving right beside them and won't let them move over. First, we all need to wake up and drive with a little respect for other drivers. Get off the phone, stop texting, playing grab tail or what ever and drive. Remember the old slogan, Watch the other driver?

  Semi's are the worst. Why they won't pull into the left lane at the ramps is beyond me. I see it all the time. I am 65 and I know how to drive. No, you don't slow down at the exits. The signs say YIELD people, they do not say STOP. We are having way to many accidents on I-24 around here!

  Prime Example – I ran a couple errands at lunch and got onto the interstate at the mall. I was blocked from merging onto the interstate by a minivan driven by an older gentleman with Ballard plates and there was NO ONE to his left. And of course once I got on I passed him and still exited at the hospital. Too many of these county folks (ok im gonna get it for that one) act like the interstate is the back road they just got off of. They drive 55 tops and yes the folks entering the area are usually going too fast and that’s a lethal combination. I have seen this for years. A car will get onto the interstate at the mall cutting over to lone oak road and act like they are driving down Olivet Church road. Folks – do the speed limit if you are gonna drive on the big boy roads….

  This is to all of you professional drivers that know all the answers..... How about the drivers coming onto the Interstate that don't budge an inch and you aren't able to move over because of traffic in the other lane? I've had to slam on my brakes more than once because of these professional drivers that don't know how to enter the interstate... Furthermore, if you want to learn the proper way to drive, try driving in Italy or Germany. That would be a real eyeopener for all the quick to judge and point fingers when you weren't there and DO NOT KNOW what really happened.

  We have traffic coming into and out of this area from Marshall County and Southern IL. Many are driving 75 mph and too many more traveling 80-85 mph. You have 5 exits in Paducah where people are getting on at slower speeds and not able to keep pace due to short on ramps. It's a toxic combination considering the sheer number of vehicles on this 2 lane interstate built in 1970's. Only public education, massive traffic enforcement and some re-engineering of the roadway itself will help reduce these crashes.

  You're absolutely right B.L. I too see it every day! People, there is NO REASON to slow down a half a mile before you get off the interstate!! There's a reason why the off ramp is so friggin' long... for you to slow down as you exit. Another thing that irritates me is people coming ON to the interstate or particularly the parkway in Marshall Co. If you are entering the parkway YOU MUST yield if there's traffic coming! If you don't yield, then prepare on getting rammed from behind especially if the outside lane of traffic is trying to exit on to the cloverleaf. People seriously DO NOT know how to drive on the parkway near the Benton Wal-Mart cloverleaf. SLOW DOWN!

  If you travel down I-24 you will see a few reasons why wrecks are happening so often on this stretch of road in McCracken County - People don't know how to drive. People slow down to 50 1/2 mile to a mile or more before an exit - others are not pulling into the left lane so those entering the highway at entrances can get up to speed. Maybe people need to take a drivers test every time they go for a renewal instead of just paying a fee and getting a license. As people get older they should be tested every year, say over 60, as they start losing their eyesight, hearing and reaction time.
