Confusion around whether an inmate had completed his sentence has led to new protocols at the McCracken County Jail.

Chief Deputy Jailer Stephen Carter told West Kentucky Star that inmate Sean Irons had come to the McCracken County Regional Jail from federal prison. He was in the McCracken facility for a cocaine charge. He also had six prior drug charges.

Since Irons had received a new drug trafficking charge, there was some question as to if he had completed his sentence. After checking with a probation officer, it was determined that the sentence was properly completed.

The confusion that surrounded this case prompted Jailer David Knight to begin a new protocol for inmate releases.

Carter said that now the jail staff will check with the database of the National Crime Information Center to make sure there are no other indictments or pending charges, and also jail supervisors will check the inmate's paperwork.

He said this should eliminate any confusion about sentences being properly completed.
