The McCracken County Public Library is offering a two-week-long fine forgiveness event for people with overdue items.

The amnesty period begins April 1 and runs through April 15, coinciding with many area schools’ spring breaks as well as National Library Week. The library encourages its patrons to return all late materials during this period and have their fines waived, regardless of how long the materials have been overdue. Patrons who have accrued late fines with no outstanding items on their record can also have those fines forgiven.

Library statistics indicate as many as one in five McCracken County children and teens are currently blocked from using library resources because of late fees.

“We are particularly excited to welcome back children and teens, whose overdue fines prevented them from checking out materials and using library resources like computers and databases,” said library director Susan Baier. “We want to remove those barriers so McCracken County youth are equipped with the tools for success in school and in life. Returning overdue materials also makes them once again available to other patrons. It’s a win-win all around.”
