New City Commission Holds First Meeting

The newly elected Paducah City Commission held their first official meeting Monday evening, with a meet and greet reception that followed.

The consent agenda was approved, and the name for the new Greenway Trail Bridge was announced. It will be known as the Bob Leeper Bridge, in honor of former McCracken County Judge Executive Bob Leeper. 

Mayor Pro-Tem Richard Abraham said he felt the 2017 resolution dealing with which flags can be displayed in the Veterans Day Parade is no longer needed. Commissioner Sandra Wilson asked for the item to be placed on the January 22nd meeting agenda, and also asked the staff to get a legal opinion regarding the resolution.


Members of the new City Commission shared with West Kentucky Star what they hope to help accomplish in this term:

Commissioner Gerald Watkins-Create new job opportunities and a first class recreational complex.

Commissioner Brenda McElroy-See Paducah grow, which economic development is key to that. Also a priority is for athletic facilities.

Mayor Pro-Tem Richard Abraham-Balance the budget, make sure the Police and Fire Departments have what they need, and finding the funds for unfunded mandates. On the wish list would be an athletic complex, which does give an opportunity to partner with those in the private sector.

Commissioner Sandra Wilson-Working together with the county and other organizations in the community for new jobs; a sportsplex; the airport; riverfront development; and the riverport.

Mayor Brandi Harless was unable to attend this meeting due to a prior commitment.

The next commission meeting will be held on January 22nd at 5:30 pm.
