Completion of the most recent section of the Greenway Trail near Campbell Street has been set back due to rain, but officials are making progress and have big plans for the area.

The new section of trail will travel next to the floodwall, behind the Holiday Inn and towards the lot previously held by the Showroom Lounge.

The construction will include two new shelters and additional lighting. The new section will also connect the unfinished sidewalks near the new transient boat dock.

West Kentucky Star recently spoke with Public Works Director Rick Murphy and City Information Officer Pam Spencer about the ongoing construction. Murphy said some completed sections of the trail had been affected by the flooding, but he didn't expect it to push the completion date back too far, with the project possibly finishing up in September.

Spencer said the city has authorized a contract with Youngblood for around $475,000 for work on this section, and the city was awarded a $500,000 grant from the Transportation Alternative Program to go towards the project.

Murphy said a map of the project is available at his office.
