Contractors will begin working overnight along part of Interstate 24 in McCracken and Marshall counties starting Tuesday, as they make progress on installation of Median Cable Barriers.

So far, crews have been working along the median with shoulder restrictions. Starting Tuesday night they will begin placement of a concrete base that will anchor the barrier posts. This work will require night-time lane restrictions between 8:00 pm and 6:00 am.

Traffic will move to the right-hand lane in the work zone, and drivers should watch for slowing and merging traffic. Concrete trucks will also be entering and leaving the work zone.

The lane restrictions will continue Wednesday and Thursday night, and crews expect to pour about one mile of the concrete base per night.

This work zone, which is just over 16 miles long, includes a 55 mph speed limit with double fines and extra police enforcement. The work zone will be taken down for the Labor Day holiday weekend travel period.

Median cable barriers are designed to provide extra safety for drivers, since it reduces the likelihood of vehicles involved in a crash crossing the median into oncoming traffic. One section of cable barrier has already been completed in Christian County, and another section there is under construction.

The $3.1 million project has an anticipated completion date of November 1.
