Paducah Tilghman High School seniors Claire Kelly and Jose Roberto dos Remedios have been named finalists in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Approximately 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, included the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

Kelly and dos Remedios are among the 15,000 students nationwide who have advanced to finalists status. To become a finalist, a semifinalist and his or her high school must submit a detailed scholarship application in which information about the semifinalist's academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received are provided. A finalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn an SAT score that confirm the student's earlier performance on the qualifying test.

Kelly is an AP Scholar and an alumna of the Governor’s Scholars Program. She is co-president of the PTHS choir and is a member of the female a cappella ensemble, Concordia. She is a member of the Paducah Tilghman Bell staff, serving as Photography Editor and Co-Editor of Arts and Entertainment. In addition, she is co-captain of the Mock Trial Team, president of the Beta Club, and a member of the National Honor Society. She is active in the youth programming and main stage productions at the Market House Theatre, is the current president of the Maiden Alley Cinema Teen Scene Board, and is a member of First Presbyterian Church where she is active in the youth group and choir. Kelly was recently named a semifinalist in the Coca-Cola Scholars Program. She will attend Belmont University in the fall where she has been named a Faculty Scholar. She is the daughter of Robin and Keith Kelly.

Dos Remedios is an AP Scholar with Distinction, an alumnus of the Governor’s School for the Arts, a Paducah Sun Teen of the Week, and is one of Kentucky’s nominees to the United States Presidential Scholars Program. He serves as co-president of the PTHS choir and is a member of the male a cappella ensemble, Prime Rib. He is the Features Editor for the Paducah Tilghman Bell. He is a member of the Varsity Academic Team, competing on the quick recall team and in the math and arts and humanities individual competition categories. He is a member of the Beta Club, the National Honor Society, the Mock Trial Team, and the Young Democrats Club. He is active on the Youth Missions Council at Concord United Methodist Church. Dos Remedios will attend the University of Pennsylvania in the fall. He is the son of Julie and Roberto dos Remedios.

“It’s exciting for Tilghman to have exceptional students such as Claire and Jose Roberto reach this academic pinnacle,” said Assistant Principal Jonathan Smith. “Their accomplishments in the classroom, participation and leadership in clubs and activities that enrich Tilghman and the school system, and dedication to create positive change in their community are marks of true excellence.”
