A Paducah 12-year-old was awarded a scholarship by the Southern Illinois chapter of the American Guild of Organists.

With over 20 piano awards and venues, Owen Cody has been chosen as one of the first recipients of the $750 scholarship. It includes the cost of organ instruction, organ literature and membership in both the national AGO and Southern Illinois Chapter.

Owen was chosen from applicants that live in western Kentucky, southern Illinois and southeastern Missouri. The application process included playing two musical selections, a 400-word essay, and a recommendation from a music instructor.

In his essay, Owen explained that he has a desire to gain more knowledge of the organ. His recommendation letter included a comment saying “Having taught hundreds of students in piano and music theory for over 30 years, I will emphasize, without any hesitation, that Owen is like no other student I have ever taught.”

The mission of the Southern Illinois Chapter of AGO is to provide interest in future organists, to promote the hearing and playing of organ music and to continually build a community of people interested in organ playing and choral conducting.
