An eighth-grader from Paducah is the state winner of the National Geographic Bee.

Hunter Watkins, who is home schooled, won $100 Friday at the competition in Bowling Green, a DVD National Geographic set and a trip to Washington, DC, to compete in the 25th annual national finals next month.

At the national level, college scholarships up to $25,000 will be given to the first-, second- and third-place winners, and the first-place finisher will travel with a parent or guardian to the Galapagos Islands.

Questions are prepared by the National Geographic Society, and the contest is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest and increase public awareness.

Schools with students in grades 4 through 8 are eligible to compete.
