A Paducah man was shot Tuesday morning during a reported domestic incident.

Paducah Police Officers were called about 1 am Tuesday to a home in the 700 block of Oakcrest Drive. There they found 39-year-old Salaam Muhammad with a single gunshot wound to his abdomen.

Muhammad’s wife, Shataka, and stepson, Anthony M. Bryant, told police that Salaam and Shataka Muhammad were in a physical altercation in the couple’s bedroom. Shataka Muhammad said her husband had pushed her into a wall and pressed his forearm against her throat.

According to police, Bryant said he heard the couple fighting and went to check on his mother. He said he found that his stepfather had her on the floor, choking her. Bryant said he tried to stop his stepfather, but could not. Bryant said he then went to another room of the home and retrieved a handgun.

When Bryant returned to his mother and stepfather’s bedroom with the gun, he said his stepfather began fighting with him. Bryant said he shot his stepfather once in the abdomen. Shataka Muhammad then called police.

Salaam Muhammad was taken to Lourdes Hospital, where he underwent surgery and was listed in stable condition.

After consultation with the McCracken County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, Paducah police detectives have not yet filed any charges in the case. The investigation is continuing.
