UPDATE:  Barbeque cooker Dale Perry Tuesday reiterated plans to organize an association made up of teams participating in Paducah's annual Barbeque on the River, and for that association to seek representation on the event's board of directors.

Perry, a member of the Good Old Boys barbecue team, said, "No one knows what goes on. We're never told anything, we're not asked anything. We're always told what to do and how to do it. We're not involved in it in any way really."

Perry went on to say during an interview Tuesday with Greg Dunker on WKYX/WNGO that he and other cookers have been misled in the past about certain aspects of the organization, and that they want to be kept more in the loop. "We don't want to run the thing, but we have no idea what's going on. For years we've been told it was a 501(c)(3), and apparently it never has been, so what's going on?."

In an email, BBQ On the River board president Susie Coiner made the following statement regarding Perry's efforts to organize the festival cookers:

"Barbecue On the River has successfully operated the festival for 20 years. Mr. Perry acknowledged this in a television interview. If he doesn't want to participate in future festicals, he doesn't have to.

Barbecue On the River is always open to suggestions to improve the festival.  The Barbecue On the River board is considering a position on the board for the organization that raises the most money for its charity.  Unfortunately that will eliminate Mr. Perry from consideration.

Let's not forget Barbecue On the River is a competition. To place a contestant on the board may create the appearance of impropriety for other competitors. We travel to other barbecue festivals across Kentucky, we may put other festival organizers on the board. There are many options."

Perry is trying to inform the other competitive cookers to attend a meeting Monday, April 21 at 6:00 pm at the Paducah Farmer's Market.  He said in a press release that the cookers are the backbone of the festival, and Barbeque on the River organizers should work for the participants, not the other way around.

The press release indicated many cookers feel there should be more transparency and accountability of public funds, and more input from participants regarding the event, so the board should include cookers.

Perry said he asked Coiner for a list of all cookers' contact information, or to send out a meeting notice on his behalf, but she declined.
