The McCracken County Sheriff's Department is warning the public about a recent phone scam.

Deputies said they got a call from a resident reporting he was contacted by someone who told him he owed money because he didn’t show up for federal jury duty.  The citizen was asked to get a money voucher for $1900 and take it to Kroger. When the citizen asked to speak with Sheriff Jon Hayden, the individual told him Hayden was the assistant sheriff.  The citizen was given two telephone numbers (270-216-2223 & 270-216-2222) when he asked to speak with the sheriff.

When detectives called the numbers, someone answered by saying, “McCracken County Sheriff’s Department.”  When questioned about who he was, the individual said some obscene words and hung up. Detectives got an audio recording when they called back stating they had called, “The McCracken County US Marshal’s Civil Division.”

Anyone who suspects they are being scammed is being advised to contact law enforcement.
