Crews worked late Monday night and Tuesday morning on priority routes, and the fluffy snow was ideal for plowing. Tuesday's sunshine helped as trucks cleared major travel routes and were able to work on lower-priority secondary highways.
Many crews planned to run until after dark Tuesday evening to take advantage of warmer temperatures. Overnight, some counties will leave a skeleton crew to take care of maintenance tasks, while remaining available for emergency calls.
With temperatures expected in the single digits again, drivers who might get out should know that refreezing of any residual moisture on pavement surfaces is likely. There is also a potential for black ice, which can easily fool drivers and cause accidents.
Remember that road conditions will likely not improve overnight due to low temperatures. Stay alert, prepare for the worst, notify friends or family of your travel routes, and check in periodically. Take provisions and extra clothing, and keep cell phones fully charged - just in case.
