Authorities investigated a suspicious substance found at the Social Security office in Lone Oak on Thursday.

McCracken County Sheriff Jon Hayden said a white powdery substance was found at the facility on Brett Chase Road. A hazardous materials team and Emergency Management were called in to investigate.

The sheriff's department indicated that the substance turned out to be sodium chlorate, which is an ingredient in herbicides.

Kentucky State Police, FBI, and Homeland Security also responded to the scene.  The FBI is now leading the investigation, according to KSP.
